WHOLE SOUL STUDIO
A Restoration Studio for Body, Soul & Spirit
The art of becoming whole.
I create paintings and experiences that explore one question:
How do we live whole in a world that fragments us?
Through art, story, embodied practice, and contemplative Christian spirituality, I help women work with the stories that have shaped their lives—and discover what can still be created from what has been.
VIRTUAL JOURNEYS · STUDIO WORKSHOPS · PRIVATE ARTFUL STORYWORK™ · RESTORATION ARTIt is not about making art.
It is about making space.
Space for your story.
Space for your body.
Space for your creativity.
Space for God.
Space to hear what has gone quiet.
Space to imagine what might still be possible.
Space to create with the life that is yours.
No art experience required.
Meet Shelley Henk, RN, BSN
Artist of the Soul
Restoration Artist · Writer · Teacher · Nurse
For more than twenty years, my life and work have revolved around one question:
How do we live whole in a world that fragments us?
1,000+ Women Served • Best-Selling Co-Author • Featured on PBS • Creator of Artful Storywork™
That question began in nursing, deepened through my own experience of grief and loss, and eventually led me into the study of whole-person health, the nervous system, story, embodiment, creativity, and faith.
But some of my greatest teachers weren't found in books.
They were found in ordinary life.
In grief.
In my body.
In prayer.
In nature.
And eventually, at the canvas.
Over time, I began to recognize the path my own restoration had taken.
FEEL. HEAL. DREAM. CREATE.
That path became The Four Elements of Wholeness™ and eventually my signature body of work, Finding Beautiful™.
Somewhere along the way, I realized:
I thought I was trying to heal my life.
God was teaching me how to create one.
Today, everything I create—my paintings, writing, teaching and Artful Storywork™—continues to explore that same question.
Registered Nurse · Certified Therapeutic Artist · Creator of Artful Storywork™
You don’t have to erase your story. You can create something beautiful with it.
None of us begins with a blank canvas.
By the time we arrive here, life has already made its marks.
Grief.
Love.
Loss.
Relationships.
Words spoken over us.
Things we inherited.
Things we chose.
Things we never would have chosen.
For years, I thought healing meant somehow getting beyond those things.
Art taught me something different.
We can create with them.
The old marks can remain.
The torn pieces can become part of the composition.
Even the ashes can become material for something new.
Inspired by the spirit of kintsugi and the quiet beauty of wabi-sabi, my work explores restoration that doesn't erase the history of what has been.
Restoration remembers.
And sometimes what we thought needed to disappear becomes part of what makes the finished work beautiful.
Finding Beautiful™
The Art of Becoming Whole.
Twenty years of healing, distilled into one year of becoming.
Finding Beautiful™ is my signature body of work—a 12-month creative pilgrimage through The Four Elements of Wholeness™.
It is the journey I wish someone could have handed me twenty years ago.
I bring together what I've learned as a nurse and whole-health educator about grief, loss, the body and nervous system with the practices that took me somewhere information alone couldn't:
art, story, embodiment, creativity, nature, and contemplative Christian spirituality.
But Finding Beautiful isn't something you simply learn.
You make your way through it.
Over twelve months, you'll create 32 drawings and four paintings as you move through the four elemental movements of wholeness:
EARTH · FEEL
Come home to what is here.
WATER · HEAL
Let what has been carried begin to move.
WIND · DREAM
Listen for what wants to come alive again.
FIRE · CREATE
Make something beautiful with what remains.
Earth holds.
Water moves.
Wind stirs.
Fire transforms.
4 Elements · 32 Creative Practices · 4 Paintings · Monthly Studio Gatherings
$497 for the complete 12-month journey
No art experience required.
Just bring your story.
The Philosophy
ART IS THE WAY IN.
I spent years trying to understand healing with my mind.
Art taught me to listen another way.
Because sometimes words aren't enough.
So we make marks.
We draw.
We paint.
We notice the body.
We tell stories.
We listen.
We pray.
We make room for God.
And sometimes, standing back from something we've made, we can finally see what we couldn't see while standing inside our story.
The invisible becomes visible.
This is Artful Storywork™—the contemplative Christian creative practice I developed to bring together story, embodied awareness, creative expression, and faith.
You don't need to know how to draw.
You don't need to consider yourself creative.
You simply need to be curious.
UNEARTH · See the story.
CULTIVATE · See differently.
CREATE · Bring forth beauty.
The canvas becomes a place of return.
It is where art becomes an altar.
RESTORATION ART
The Four Elements made visible.
My paintings emerge from the same elemental process I teach inside Finding Beautiful.
EARTH
My FEEL paintings begin with instinctive marks, plaster, texture and layered papers—some carrying handwritten stories that eventually disappear beneath the surface.
Earth holds.
WATER
My HEAL paintings are built through water, translucent washes, written words and marks of restoration. Pigment runs, pools and moves across earlier layers like stones being released into a river.
Water moves.
WIND
My DREAM paintings begin with air. Spray paint, feathers, prairie grasses and other things that move with the wind leave marks I could never completely control myself.
Wind stirs.
FIRE
My CREATE paintings begin with fire—charcoal, burned edges, ash and the act of refining. What has been changed by fire becomes material for something new.
And sometimes, there is gold.
Fire transforms.
My work is layered, weathered and imperfect because restoration rarely looks polished.
I don't paint over the history of the canvas until it disappears.
I create with what is there.
PRIVATE ARTFUL STORYWORK™
For the stories that ask for a little more space.
Sometimes there is one story, transition, loss or question that asks for our full attention.
Private Artful Storywork™ is a one-to-one contemplative creative experience where we slow down and listen together.
We make marks.
We notice the body.
We follow the story.
We make room for God.
And we create with what emerges.
Not to erase what happened.
To see it differently.
Stories from the Studio
What happens when women begin creating with their own stories.
GRACE IS THE GROUND BENEATH IT ALL.
Finding Beautiful is rooted in a contemplative, grace-filled Christian spirituality.
I don't believe God is waiting on the other side of our healing for us to finally get ourselves together.
I believe He meets us here.
In the questions.
In the grief.
In our bodies.
In the fragments.
In the making.
And sometimes the pilgrimage home isn't about finding our way back to God at all.
It's discovering that He has been with us the whole way.
That is the beautiful gospel underneath everything I create.
COME HOME.
Bring the beautiful parts.
The broken parts.
The unfinished parts.
The things you understand.
And the things you don't.
Bring your grief.
Bring your questions.
Bring your dreams.
Bring your faith.
Bring the life you actually have.
You don't need a blank canvas.
You only need somewhere to begin.
